Experienced Principal’s Development Course
An Additional Qualification (AQ) Course. Qualified candidates may also apply to Charles Sturt University for inclusion of the EPDC AQ as a prior learning credit towards an M.Ed degree.
Why is this course offered?
The Experienced Principal’s Development Course (EPDC) is offered to provide opportunities for practising principals and vice-principals to explore components of their role in greater depth. The program encourages participants to reflect on their experience, knowledge, skills and attitudes in dealing with issues related to managing and leading a school. This is a unique opportunity offered only through OPC.
What makes this program unique?
All components of the OPC Experienced Principal’s Development Course are based on provincial legislation, Ministry of Education policies, and current theory and research. Local board policies and procedures are considered in light of broader legislation and research. The interpretation and application of the knowledge gained in this course is guided by a primary commitment to student learning and well-being.
How is the program organized?
EPDC is made available to candidates in two ways. Typically a district school board will contract with OPC to provide a module that will suit candidate interest and board priorities. OPC provides all materials and facilitation costs for the module. The school board will pay all location costs. Selected modules are also available at OPC during the year for individual candidates. The EPDC public schedule is included on this website. Individuals may register for the core or elective modules offered at OPC for a cost of $450.00 per module.
The EPDC is organized into 2 core modules and 6 elective modules. To complete the program and qualify for the AQ a candidate must complete Core 1 and 2 as well as any 2 of the elective modules. Candidates must have completed at least 2 years of administrative experience at the time that the AQ is recommended to the Ontario College of Teachers. There is no time limit for completion of the course and the core and elective modules may be taken in any order. Currently the following modules are available:
Core Modules
Core 1 – Human Resources – Issues and Implications
Core 2- Principal as Instructional Leader: Curriculum
Elective Modules
Elective 1 – Building and Sustaining Relationships in a Collaborative School Community
Elective 2 – Shaping School Culture – Building a Learning Community
