"Schools have a vital role to play in preparing our young people to take their place as informed, engaged, and empowered citizens who will be pivotal in shaping the future of our communities, our province, our country, and our global environment.”
Ontario Ministry of Education, Shaping Our Schools, Shaping Our Future (2007),p.1
We live in times of extraordinary change. Never has it been more critical to teach students the importance of fostering environmental stewardship. The role of the principal is essential in the implementation of any school initiative, especially one that requires a culture shift. In order for the Ontario Ministry of Education’s environmental education policy framework Acting Today Shaping Tomorrow to be successfully implemented, there must be whole school engagement, where a passion is shared by staff and students to promote changes in behaviour that will result in environmentally sustainable practices in the school, board, and community. The principal as change facilitator is key in promoting a shared vision, involving all stakeholders, providing resources and support and actively monitoring progress. Celebrating success, no matter how small, will help motivate participants and build towards sustaining the movement.
