Survey Background

In 2019, a motion was passed, directing the creation of an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) committee. As an initial step, we collected demographic data to better understand how Members self-identify. The first Member demographic survey was conducted in 2020.  This data helped the committee understand our membership and refine its mandate. Ongoing surveys help assess the effectiveness of current actions and initiatives and inform future priorities and areas for change.

Impact and Progress

Over the past few years, the results have informed recommendations that have led to more opportunities for under-represented identities to engage in all aspects of the OPC service and membership. Some examples include the formation of

  • additional committees focused on recruitment and retention, professional learning and governance.

  • the EDI District Rep position on each local OPC executive (2022)

  • the OPC Indigenous Leadership Circle was formed (2025)

  • designated Board of Directors positions for representatives from the EDI Advisory Committee and the Indigenous Leadership Circle.

The OPC has also produced and released the EDI Framework and a Statement on Human Rights.

2026 Demographic Survey Engagement

The original survey was drafted through an extensive and consultative process. However, we still recognize that it may not be perfectly constructed, worded or defined according to everyone’s personal views and lived experiences. If you have suggestions for other comments or questions that could be used later, please share them with us. Member feedback has been used an integrated into various aspects of the survey.

Because the term “diversity” captures so many different distinctions between groups of people, we choose to define it as broadly as possible by using the protected grounds identified in the Ontario Human Rights Code. The questions are based on similar questions included in the 2016 Canadian Census and feedback from various partners who identify as or in under-represented groups. When answering the questions, we encourage you to include any other group affiliations or options that you feel are important for us to know about.
