Guidelines for Terminating LTD Coverage

Subject to the District School Board’s terms and conditions requirement, you may request termination of your Long-term Disability (LTD) coverage under the following circumstances

  • You are eligible for your 70 per cent unreduced pension (generally after 35 years of qualifying service) - LTD Option 1, LTD Option 2, and LTD Option 5
  • You attained the 85 factor (age plus working experience) – LTD Option 3, and LTD Option 4
  • You are retiring and have sufficient sick days that you can use in the event of illness, between the termination and retirement dates
  • You are within the waiting period of your LTD Option (100/150 calendar days) from your retirement date, and would not be eligible to make a claim
  • You are within the waiting period of your LTD Option (100/150 calendar days) from your pension eligibility date
  • You are within the waiting period of your LTD Option (100/150 calendar days) from age 65
  • You are age 65, which is the maximum age to maintain LTD coverage.

LTD is a Condition of Employment

If LTD is a condition of employment (Durham, Greater Essex, Ottawa-Carleton, Peel, Superior-Greenstone, Trillium Lakelands, Upper Grand), and termination is due to retirement, proof of your retirement notice and the board’s acceptance are required.

If termination is due to the 70 per cent unreduced pension eligibility date, OTPP Service Record showing the number of qualifying years (LTD Option 1, LTD Option 2, LTD Option 5) must be provided.

If termination is due to the 85 factor, OTPP Statement of Pension Benefits showing the date that you attained the 85 factor (LTD Option 3, LTD Option 4) must be provided.

To terminate your coverage, complete the application to terminate LTD coverage form and return to OPC Benefits, with the appropriate documentary proof, as applicable.
