Overview

Our Equitable and Inclusive Schools, Part 1 – Administrator Focus supports candidates in moving forward in their journey of learning and applying an anti-oppression lens, skills and leadership practices necessary to create equitable and inclusive communities.

Critical reflection and conversations will center on

  • identifying systems of oppression and understanding how they operate in education
  • understanding our own unique identities and experiences and how it relates to the responsibility we carry as equitable leaders and
  • necessary conversations that disrupt and challenge dominant narratives.

This program is made up of four modules. The breakdown of asynchronous and synchronous hours that total the required 125 hours is shown below.

Pre-module and Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) Access

Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Pre-module

All candidates will be asked to complete an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) self-directed module (generally 2-5 hours) that is meant activate prior knowledge, provide an opportunity for self-reflection and new knowledge building. It is our hope that you will take the learning and reflection from this pre-module forward into the course as you engage with the facilitator and colleagues on a variety of topics. 

Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) Access

All program content and the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) access will be available to candidates/participants one week in advance of the program/course and will remain active for two weeks after the end of the program/course. Following this period, candidates/participants will no longer have access to assignments, conversations, resources or other content. Please save any information that you would like to retain during the timeframe that you have access to the LMS.

Module 1 - Centering the Work - Identifying Systemic Oppression
In this module, candidates will focus on setting norms and discussing expectations of the course. Key topics include
  • the difference between equity seeking and sovereignty seeking
  • how oppression manifests in our system how data is used in our systems and
  • the role we have to play in transforming the system by developing our critical consciousness.
Module 2 - Understanding Ourselves as Equitable Leaders
In this module, candidates will develop a deeper understanding of themselves as leaders and the role they play in creating equitable schools and workspaces. Key topics include
  • intersectional identity intersectionality and power and privilege
  • legal obligations in creating equitable and inclusive schools and
  • recognizing the importance of leaders having challenging conversations and disrupting harmful practices.
Module 3 - Disrupting Dominant Narratives

In this module candidates will examine dominant narratives in education. Key topics include

  • how dominant narratives have been used to shape instructional practices
  • critical review of operational practices within schools and school systems and
  • how leaders can disrupt these narratives to push for meaningful change.
Module 4 - Creating an Equitable and Inclusive School

In this module, candidates will identify the difference between performative and authentic actions in creating equitable and inclusive schools. Key topics include

  • eliminating barriers to student well-being and learning
  • equity audits and
  • and how to enhance leadership towards creating equitable and inclusive schools. 
Module 5 - Pulling it all Together

In this module, candidates will have an opportunity to share and discuss the findings of their equity audits. Key topics include

  • physiological responses to stressful situations
  • the impact of racism and discrimination on mental health and well-being and
  • well-being strategies to support leadership in creating equitable and inclusive schools.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) Certificate of Qualification and Registration in good standing.

Program Fee

$900.00.

Includes all four modules and a $50 non-refundable registration fee.

Program Tax Receipt

A tax receipt will be generated and available on your OPC account by the end of February for the previous tax year.

To access the document:

  • Log into the OPC website.
  • Go to "My Profile" on the navy blue bar towards the top right of the browser window.
  • Click on “Program Tax Receipts”.
  • Select the appropriate year to open and print your tax receipt.
